“A really classy Rosso di Montalcino from one of Montalcino’s top producers, this is full of juicy orange-edged red fruits, with iodine and saline notes ringing on the long finish. Delightful.” – James Button, Decanter, Sept. 2025

Diego Morra Verduno Pelaverga DOC 204 Ian D'Agata 12/09/2025 95
Verbiage

“Diego Morra has once again come up with another outstanding Verduno Pelaverga wine, that might just be the wine of the year in 2024. Nicely saturated red. Intensely floral and spicy on the captivating nose, with an especially strong presence of violet nicely lifting the nuances of red cherries, blackberries, flint, balsamic oils and black pepper. Then rather juicy and very suave in the mouth, with pure flavours of red berries and plum complicated by slightly earthy and tarry notes that are fairly typical of Diego Morra’s interpretation of this grape and wine. Finishes absolutely seamless and long thanks to nicely balancing acidity and a touch of underlying salinity. Planted in 1995, 2008 and 2018 with northwest to southeast exposures, between 220-260 meters above sea level, the winery can count on a variety of soils so when picking the grapes and then blending the various lots, it all boils down to a quest for balance, by identifying the right mix of grapes born from more or less vigourous plots, plots that tend to give more or less spicy and more or less freshness. My experience is that at Diego Morra the talent level is such that they rarely, if ever get the blend wrong. About 15,000 bottles/year of Verduno Pelaverga are produced, all stainless steel fermented and aged. Drinking window: 2025-2034.”

“The nose is reserved, with hidden depths of dark cherry and plum waiting to be unveiled, gradually peeking out from behind a veil of vanilla and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is initially soft and rounded before the ripe, structured tannins make their presence known. Flavors of licorice root, cherry, and blackberry emerge, contributing to the wine’s lush and enjoyable youthful character. Drink Now” — Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast, Sept. 2024

“Jump into a glass where black cherries and wild plums meet woodland spices and star anise. The aromatics keep building: fresh blackberries dusted with cardamom forest floor and sweet pipe tobacco creating a fascinating complexity. The flavors surge forward with impressive concentration where toasted oak currently frames the wine but needs time to fully harmonize with the abundant fruit. Each element speaks of finesse rather than raw power bringing energy and vibrancy to every sip. This is a serious wine showing both immediate appeal and future promise through its purity and thoughtful craftsmanship. Drink Now – 2045” — Jeff Porter
