Irpinia

The area around Avellino (belonging to the province of Avellino and that of Benevento and Caserta) has proven, over the past few decades, that it can supply some of the finest whites and reds in southern Italy. Like Campania in general, it is a triumph of indigenous grapes that go all the way back to the ancient Greeks and Romans – like Greco and Aglianico or Fiano. The quality potential is so high, the region’s DOCG wines (Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and Taurasi) are all located in these hills, characterized by volcanic soils, very rich in minerals, especially sulfur.
