“An alluring, spicy and dusty mix of cherry and raspberry preserves, crushed stone and dusty flowers is lifted by cedar shavings and dried citrus peels as the majestic 2017 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is fleshy yet delicate in feel, displaying pure ripe red berry fruit, nicely contrasted by salty mineral tones, and lacking only a bit of midpalate depth that might take it to the next level. It tapers off long while leaving the mouth watering for more, as a gentle tug of tannin slowly fades under rosy inner florals. The 2020 Barolo del Comune di La Morra is a very pretty wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Ripe red cherry, sweet spice, flowers, mint and new leather are some of the notes that inform this translucent, mid-weight Barolo from Marcarini. All the elements are very nicely integrated. Deceptively understated, the 2020 Barolo La Serra is a nuanced wine that beautifully captures the essence of this site. Crushed flowers, mint, white pepper, sage and rose petal lend aromatic brilliance to a Barolo that impresses with its sculpted, chiseled personality. “I remember tasting Costanti’s 2019 Rosso di Montalcino in 2021 and thinking how Brunello-esque it was: the sturdy structure was almost uncharacteristic, yet it certainly boded well for the Brunello. Simply gloriously sculpted, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is indeed statuesque and stately. While it doesn’t give everything up all at once, it is gracious in its presentation. From chestnut forest and sweet earth, to anise and orange extract, the aromas are visceral, and boundless depths of wild red berries suffuse the palate. It vibrates with scintillating acidity and long, tactile tannins which stretch out leisurely. I bet that Rosso has hit its stride now – if you have some, it’s what you’ll want to drink while waiting for this captivatingly beautiful Brunello. Rich, chocolatey character here with notes of raisined berries, plum skins, walnuts and charred bark. Full-bodied and broad with fine, nicely polished tannins and deep core of fruit. Lingering finish. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Barolo Pernanno offers up hints of plum, cinnamon, menthol, licorice, sage, dried herbs and a kiss of French oak. Dark and brooding in feel, the 2020 retains terrific energy and plenty of nuance. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of balsamic inflections to round things out.
