Matané

Matané was founded in 2008 to highlight the incredible potential of Southern Italy’s winemaking scene and in fact, the wines are a tribute to the native grapes of Puglia and the unique terroir. The winery’s name comes from the names of the owners: MAria, TAra and NEil.

THE HISTORY

Neil, Maria, and Tara Empson embarked on a quest to find the perfect terroir in the heel of the boot, for their winemaking aspirations. After an extensive search, they stumbled upon some of the region’s most exceptional and ancient vineyards. This discovery marked the inception of their project, aptly named Matané, after the trio.

Matané’s mission is to delve into, enhance, and share the richness and excellence of Salento viticulture. Today, the brand works to ensure the utmost quality, consistency, and authenticity. Paying homage to Salento’s cultural heritage, Matané’s packaging features a depiction of the Pizzica, a traditional local dance. The Pizzica holds historical significance, originally associated with Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, and rooted in ancient rituals brought to Puglia by Greek settlers. Through their wines and packaging, Matané celebrates the deep-rooted traditions and history of Salento, weaving a narrative that connects past and present.

TERROIR

Salento is located in the southernmost portion of Apulia and is Italy’s easternmost area. It is a land of extreme and dramatic beauty with lush, dark red soil bathed in Mediterranean sunlight. Historic native varieties and outstanding vineyards are constantly windswept by the salty breezes of the Adriatic and the Ionian seas. The peninsula’s amazing palette of colors and sensations gives Salentino wines a layered depth, unique to the region.
