Pievalta
Located in the heart of the Castelli di Jesi in Le Marche, Pievalta has been crafting exceptional Verdicchio through biodynamic farming since 2002. Overseen by Silvano Brescianini, and run day to day by enologist Alessandro Fenino, the estate believes that healthy soil makes extraordinary wine. The result is a collection of award-winning whites that are as much a reflection of the land as they are of the people who tend it.
THE HISTORY
Pievalta began when Silvano Brescianini of Franciacorta fame recognized the potential of Le Marche’s terroir and its native Verdicchio. They first purchased 24 hectares in Maiolati Spontini, and continued to expand until today. Silvano brought on enologist Alessandro Fenino, who had previously worked with him in Franciacorta, tasking him with focusing exclusively on crafting age-worthy, biodynamically cultivated Verdicchio. Today, Silvano oversees the broader vision, while Alessandro and his wife Silvia Loschi manage daily operations in both the vineyard and the cellar, producing around 150,000 bottles a year, depending on vintage conditions.
The symbol featured on the Tre Ripe label represents biodynamic cultivation for us. It is a stylized vortex, inspired by the energetic swirl created during the dynamization process—when biodynamic preparations are carefully mixed in water before being applied to the soil and vines. This vital movement is at the heart of our philosophy, symbolizing the transfer of energy and life back into the vineyard, bringing it life.
THE TERROIR
Pievalta’s vineyards extend across four distinct hillside municipalities in Castelli di Jesi: Maiolati Spontini, San Paolo di Jesi, Montecarotto and Cupramontana. The estate was built gradually, beginning with 24 hectares at Maiolati Spontini, followed shortly after by a further 5.5 hectares on Monte Follonica at San Paolo di Jesi, with additional vineyards at Montecarotto and Cupramontana acquired in 2018. Today the property covers 44.1 hectares in total, of which 30.4 are planted to vine. Each site brings its own soil composition, altitude and aspect, and this diversity is central to Pievalta’s identity as a producer.
From the very first vintage in 2003, Alessandro managed the vineyards organically, and by 2005 had naturally progressed to biodynamics. In 2008, Pievalta became the first certified biodynamic estate in the Marche, and for a period held Biodyvin certification, the same body used by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy. Today the estate is certified organic. In the vineyard, legume cover crops are sown between the rows and biodynamic preparations are applied to encourage the formation of fertile soils, stimulate plant vitality and deepen the connection between vine and soil. Yields are kept deliberately low, averaging just 70 to 80 quintals per hectare, and all of the fruit is harvested by hand in whole bunches.
