THE HISTORY
Donna Lucilla is rooted in the elegance, heritage, and timeless allure of Rome. Named for the Roman empress Lucilla—daughter of Marcus Aurelius and a woman of intelligence and influence—the brand name unites Donna, a title of respect and authority, with Lucilla, derived from the Latin lux, meaning “light.” Together, they evoke grace, wisdom, and radiance.
Roma DOC pays tribute to the Eternal City (Urbe Aeterna) through a collection of wines that blend ancient tradition with modern sophistication. Sourced from vineyards that encircle Rome, these wines are crafted from native grape varieties grown in volcanic soils—capturing the true character of the region and its centuries-old winemaking heritage.
The Roma DOC denomination was established in 2011 by a group of pioneering producers, including Poggio le Volpi, working across approximately 175 hectares of vineyards. Their mission: to revive the capital’s millennia-old wine tradition through expressive terroir and indigenous grapes.
With a focus on refined design and a deep sense of place, Donna Lucilla offers more than exceptional wine—it delivers a curated experience where history, style, and substance converge.
THE TERROIR
The wines of Donna Lucilla are born from a landscape shaped by centuries of natural drama and cultural legacy. The Roma DOC production zone spans a diverse geography, offering a uniquely expressive growing environment defined by altitude, climate, and volcanic soils. Elevations range from 0 to 600 meters above sea level, creating a dynamic mix of microclimates—warmer near the coast, cooler as you move inland. This variation supports optimal ripening conditions across both red and white varieties, contributing to balanced structure and layered complexity in the final wines.
What unites this varied terrain is its volcanic origin. The soils, rich in minerals and porous in texture, enhance water regulation and promote deep root development. This translates to wines with natural freshness, aromatic clarity, and a distinct mineral tension—hallmarks of the Roma DOC identity.
Donna Lucilla’s Roma DOC Bianco is a blend of Malvasia Puntinata and Bombino, native varieties known for their expressive aromatics, citrus-driven profiles, and bright acidity. The Roma DOC Rosso combines Montepulciano, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, offering depth, structure, and refined tannins—all elevated by the signature vibrancy of volcanic terroir.
