Cascina Rabaglio

Cascina Rabaglio was established in 2005 by siblings Filippo and Daniela Rigo and their friend Andrea Salatin. Their goal was to honor the agricultural legacy of Filippo and Daniela’s grandfather, and today they make authentic wines that embody the terroir and character of their vineyards, which are located in Alba, Treiso, and Neive.

History

Cascina Rabaglio is a tiny boutique winery located in the hills of the Langhe, owned by the Rigo siblings and their friend Andrea. The young partners first started with hazelnuts and grapes, with wine following in 2012. “Cascina Rabaglio” is the name of the farmhouse near the town of Alba, home to the white truffle, with Rabaglio coming from the word “Rabaj,” the original name of the village in Piedmontese dialect. The vineyards are located in and around Alba, Treiso, and Neive, growing Nebbiolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, and Dolcetto grapes. The wines produced here include Nebbiolo D’Alba, Barbaresco, Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, Langhe Arneis, and Langhe Riesling. The famous local “Tonda Gentile” hazelnuts naturally grow in the areas not suited to viticulture. The “Cascina Rabaglio” cantina is just outside of the historic center of Barbaresco, a beautiful village in the heart of the Langhe, which has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

 Terroir

The entire Barbaresco area was formed during the Miocene period. The soil is mainly made up of calcareous marl. It is full of clay and rich in limestone, with different percentages of calcium and varying amounts of sand. The Langhe area has a temperate-to-cold sub-continental climate boasting certain unique qualities. The Alps serve as a sort of protective barrier while mild, humid winds come from the Ligurian Sea. The valleys and hills at different elevations, as well as different types of exposure and wind patterns, create an incredible variety of different microclimates.

In the Langhe, the area around Barbaresco tends to be more homogeneous, with milder temperatures and less abundant rainfall, and the narrow valleys here allow for a bit more wind.
